Working Out
I was working at an advertising agency in Chicago and was becoming disenchanted with the work. Since I was thinking of leaving, I figured ‘why not move cities as well and get out of the cold & snow?’. I started exploring client opportunities in Los Angeles and someone who I thought was a friend told me that I couldn’t which cities AND “sides” of the business at once — it had to be one or the other. I thought I should pursue the ideal and only when that didn’t pan out consider a Plan B option. With a bit of time & effort, I secured a client-side job in L.A. and have lived happily there ever since.
At age 17 when I got my first job, my dad said “Why are you in such a rush to go to work? You’ll be working the rest of your life!” Wish I’d have listened and at least went to college first. Everything was paid for, I had a roof over my head and no worries. Being so burned out now from working so hard, but still 10 years away from early retirement, those words are constantly on my mind. I can’t switch jobs easily because I don’t have a degree and just about everyone requires one these days.
Don’t tan and don’t smoke. Thirty years later I realized how good that advice was.
Believe it or leave it! Time for a job change!
When I was getting ready to head off to Navy bootcamp, my mother’s boyfriend advised the following; “Why don’t you just find a nice man to take care of you?” When I gave him a shocked look he simply revised it to, “Okay, a nice woman?” Unbelievable!!! I went ahead with my plans to join the Navy and learn a trade. Today, I’m a successful engineering officer in the U.S. Merchant Marine.
Now that you’re pregnant, you should quit law school.
“Don’t go to bed angry”. WORST ADVICE EVER. Go to bed, get some rest. In the morning things may not look so bad and perhaps cooler heads can prevail.
Buy land, because they aren’t making it anymore
The worst advice, which I got all the time, was ‘If you wait until you can afford it to have kids, you’ll never have them. So have them while you are young!’
I can’t believe how many people buy into this! Instead of having kids, I moved to Yellowstone National Park, lived there for three years, then moved to Teton Valley, Idaho, where I found a job that gave me the opportunity to travel the world. In the meantime, my husband and I found financial stability and finally decided to have children in our 30’s. Waiting to have kids until I could afford it was the BEST decision I ever made. Not only can I offer my children financial stability, but I can offer them parents with wisdom, maturity and world experiences.
“You can’t fight City Hall.”
Really? Why not? Someone has to! Injustice will never change if we don’t fight to change it!
