The team at Title Nine has many players — and many coaches. Our own athletic and personal lives have been shaped and influenced by coaches we’ve had, making the decision to embark on the same path an important one. We look up to those who lead the way for us: it’s time for us to lead the way for the next generation.
Do YOU coach? Tell us why below.
I ran competitively through high school and college, then continued training/competing through the next 30 years. I am now 52 and have been coaching high school distance runners for the past 7 years. They energize me, keep my training honest, and help motivate me to compete at the best level I can for my age. But I discovered that when it’s not about ME, when my running can help someone ELSE–that is the most rewarding thing. Distance running tends to be a self-centered activity, but coaching has turned that around and now I feel that it’s the most self-less thing I do all day. I certainly get pleasure out of running with kids so young, but being a part of their progress and eventual success doing the sport I love is such an amazing experience. Coaching has brought my enthusiasm for distance running to a higher level than ever, and I am so grateful to be a part of creating their life-long love of running and sports in general. As coaches we are surely building athletes, but also more than that—we are building truly superior people.
I am currently a Mom of 2 boys and I coach my oldest son’s baseball team (9-10 year olds). I have played sports my whole life starting from age 6 and even played D1 volleyball and softball. I have been blessed to coach girls volleyball for several years, but as a full time career woman as well, my time is focused on my kids and their activities more now. Maybe at some point I’ll move back to coaching girls, but for now I love mixing it up with smelly little boys that are learning and loving the game of baseball. To see them succeed and become good sports in both winning and losing has created special moments for all of us. To share sports is to share fitness, emotions, skills, desire and respect for teammates and your opponent. I’ve learned all of these from my parents and coaches and hope to pass that along to the next generation of athletes finding their way through sports!
I coach soccer because I love it. Player of the game since kindergarten. I still play on 2 co-ed teams (outdoor and indoor). I was an assistant coach with a friend who coached teenage girls, and I loved it. Now I coach my son’s team. It is great to see the kids get excited about the game and the exercise. Very rewarding when the kids actually complete a play during a game that we had been working on, and it pays off with a goal!
I have coached soccer at all ages and levels for approximately 16 years. I started out for the love of the game. I still love the game, but I realize now how much of an impact I can make on a child’s life. I have coached so many kids and have learned so much from each one of them. Every time I leave the pitch I learn something about my players or myself. Coaching High School soccer – it’s about empowering young ladies, to be leaders, confident people who are not afraid to, in turn help others. No matter how my day is going . when I step onto that field everything is good!
Coaching is such a great way to connect with kids!
I am a single mom & coach U12 girls soccer. I love when the girls make the connection between drills practiced and successful plays on the field!
My first job was coaching and after many years in corporate America I found my way back to coaching. I had the BEST job in HS and college. I taught sailing every summer. I taught kids how to sail and coached the advanced sailors to the podium. It took me a while, but 8 years ago I got back into coaching this time in the world of triathlon and running. I have been blessed with the opportunity to work with hundreds of athletes of ALL levels. I coach men and women in my tri coaching business. I also a coach for TEAM in Training which is incredibly rewarding to get these huge hearted athletes across the finish line – many for the first (but never the last) time. I coach a coach to 5K program to get women ready for the Freihofer’s Run for Women 5K. For the past 4 years we have had over 400 women to sign up. These women come from all places in life and watching them become athletes is incredibly inspiring. They make me a better and stronger athlete. As a team leader for Team LUNA Chix I get to bring my coaching knowledge to young girls and women looking to learn more about triathlon. I have met and touched in a positive/life changing way far more people via my role as a coach that I ever could in the corporate world. I feel (hear, see) my impact on others on a daily basis. I so hope my boys can find a career as rewarding and not have to take a break as I did. I help with my son’s school run program at school and speak to the girl’s program, to ensure the kids understand the value of daily activity and having a sport that can carry them through life. I know all that sports taught me growing up and want to make sure we continue to introduce current and future generations to a life well lived!
I don’t coach sports; I coach business team members in success principles. I get to work with young adults as well as older persons and expose them to ideas, authors, and principles that they probably do not hear about in school. As a team we learn to work together for the benefit of each person while benefiting the whole as well. By coaching and mentoring and exposing them to a more non-traditional, yet popular, form of marketing and business development I find that I can help them economically. If their economics improve, new options are open to them in other areas of interest as well.
I coach because I enjoy helping young girls learn the sport and to give them a positive role model. Also because my 8 yr old daughter likes to have mom as her coach. Just knowing that we can only get better and watching them improve is motivation enough for me!
I was lucky to have wonderful coaches as a young athlete . They coached me thru my elementary years …. Instilling confidence , persistence , & passion for the sports I played , basketball & softball . They were young themselves just 10 years older than most of the kids they coached , yet their knowledge & willingness to share it changed my life . I was able to play high school ball & received a full athletic scholarship to college . They afforded me my first coaching gig as a CYO coach to 3rd grade girls … Then onto AAU girls basketball . They attended my wedding 15 years ago & still to this day influence me in the arena of sports . I took a break from coaching when my children were born but have stepped back into that wonderful role again in the last two years . I have had the pleasure of coaching my son’s basketball team for the last two years …. And when he tells me that his friends are asking if I plan on coaching again the next season I know that I have passed on the legacy that my coaches gave to me . Sports teaches cooperation , responsibility, mental & physical strength, sportsmanship & yes , humility sometimesus regardless of our gender , age , or any other background ! All of this while having fun ! I have two girls that I hope to also pass on this legacy too ….. All so that they , as well as their brother realize that hard work and a love for something can pay huge dividends in so many ways! Let the ripples continue for many more generations !!!
