This essay is dedicated to 3 people who died this year: Mom, Alexis, and Mark.
The Ocean:
“Thou glorious mirror, . . ./Glasses itself in tempests; in all time/Calm or convulsed–in breeze, or gale, or storm . . ./Dark-heaving;–boundless, endless, and sublime–The image of Eternity–the throne of the invisible.” (Byron). The ocean is a place of solace and comfort for us as we remember those who are gone. The memories of youth when we played in the waves with fearless trust that somehow the realm of the invisible is nurturing us for some future experience.
Surfing above the fathomless abode of glorious sea creatures and being a part of their realm is something I have always wanted to do. I am 60 years old this week and have always wanted to experience the wild waves. The ocean has a healing effect for the body as well as the soul. The arm of waves curl over the sides of the board supporting the surfer: Wind and mist renewing our vision of life.
What a beautiful surfboard!
oooooooh…. to learn something new!! I have always wanted to learn how to surf and this beautiful surfboard would give me a great head start. I am about to turn 43 in a couple of days…..so it’s never too late to try something new. we live in virginia but very close to the coast of north carolina. we will be camping in hatteras, nc this summer where there is good surfing. love your clothes!!
I think my mom deserves this surfboard more than anyone else in the world. My mom and I both live in the desert and visit the beach a lot. Ginger, my mom, has always dreamed to surf and would if she got this. She boogieboarded once and had the time of her life. Even passer-byers noticed. Please help grant her wish.
I won’t mention my mom’s age, but, it’s thanks to Title 9 that she could pursue her love of gymnastics through college! 30 years later, she FINALLY saved enough to buy a 490 square foot apartment at the beach, but now wants to give it up because she feels guilty having a place of her own. My mom is motivation itself and taught me that staying active equals a better life. That’s why I am writing to win her the surfboard-I hope it will motivate her to keep living her dream-and take up surfing of course!
I grew up in Florida and always dreamed of surfing, but was afraid to try. Suddenly I was turning 30, and to celebrate my milestone, I flew to the Nicoya peninsula of Costa Rica and spent 7 days learning to surf in the warn Pacific. Surfing changed my life, and is my bliss, as I always knew in my heart it would be. I haven’t been back on a board since because of finances. I would love to win this surfboard, as a reminder to always face my fears, and to keep me centered me on my journey.
My son is my hero. My son has autism. My son loves to run. I love to run. We have started running races together. It is fun, but mostly I do it to build his self esteem and confidence. He loves people cheering him on. And he is proud of himself when he “wins”. ” As long as you try your hardest, you are a winner” I tell him. We don’t surf yet. We would learn something new together. We’ll cheer each other on and we’ll try our hardest. He’ll be proud and he will be my hero.
surfing I feel it like a heartbeat surfing I feel it constantly surfing at the edge of my consciousness surfing like a part of me that belongs surfing to something bigger then myself surfing is calling me surfing and even though it leaves me surfing a little scared (in that good way!) surfing and a lot in love with the possibility surfing that something so beautiful surfing could make me feel whole surfing I want to find that part of myself surfing that belongs on a surfboard surfing I want to take that first ride of my life surfing
A surfboard is a piece of freedom with a leash.
Get busy living or get busy dying” (Andy Defresne, Shawshank Redemption)
I choose to get busy living! Rather than watching my adult children surf early mornings and late afternoons in our favorite little Costa Rican village I want to join them…I want this summer to be the one “mom finally stood up on the board and rode a wave”…I want to use the board as our picnic table just enjoying their company as the sun sets… I want that board to remind me of walking along the beach with them after a day of surfing and saying, “Luv you mom.” Now that’s living!
