Our road-trip ready companions, our most trusted confidants, our ever-encouraging “let’s go outside – and get muddy!” buddies, we don’t know where we would be without our wiggly, panting best friends. On location, our animal extras often end up stealing the show! Want to meet some of ours? Check out our gallery here.
Now, it’s YOUR turn to share your critter companions. Tell us below: who’s your best friend, and what do they mean to you? Don’t be shy about sharing pictures!
We adopted Jack, our fluffy black retriever mix, from a no-kill shelter in Maine 8 years ago. My husband (who is in the Coast Guard) was off to a school for 7 months shortly after Jack joined our family. Jack was by my side for many walks, hikes, and one epically stressful move from Maine to L.A. while my husband was still gone. Since then, he has joined us for 2 additional cross county moves (to Virginia, and now in Washington state), as well as another deployment, and the addition of our 3rd bonus child. He is much mellower than he was 8 years ago, but still my constant walking and hiking companion. He is a shoulder for my kids when they are sad, as well. Love our 4 legged friend!
You guys are too dog-centric! I have the world’s best workout supervisor in my giant Maine Coon tomcat, Jack. Jack eyes me from the top of the stairs leading into the garage, and keeps me honest on my weight workouts in there. He adds the extra boost for planks, by adding his 20 lbs to my back. He is especially helpful during yoga as he sits at the corner of the mat ready with all claws to motivate me all the more not to fall over. It’s outstanding to always have the company!
My adorable 4legged BFF is my 5yr old Parson Russell Terrier..named Murphy. He loves to keep me active with catching the ball in the yard, long walks and hikes in the park and loves boat rides in the summer. I’m so lucky to have him.. A dog is the only thing on earth that loves you more than he loves himself.
When we picked our little Pumpernickle out of a litter of seven adorable puppies, I asked the Shelter Manager Deb, “Will he be a good runner dog? Even in the winter?” Twelve years later, Pumpernickle is still my best running buddy. We go out in all kinds of weather, with a double baby jogger or by ourselves. I am grateful to have a friend to pull me outside everyday and remind what a great joy it is to go out and sniff around for a little while.
I currently have 4 Shelties, not only are they my best friends but 2 are also my working partners. I compete in herding events with Tana and Ao Lani. Bard has retired and McGee did not sustain interest after the started level. Currently Tana is working towards his Herding Championship while Ao Lani has just entered the intermediate level. It is always a joy and a challenge to herd with a loose eyed dog and all 3 of us enjoy ourselves immensely.
I also volunteer as a foster for mid Florida Sheltie rescue and have kept in touch with all my fosters “furever” families.
My 4-legged BFF is a 3 year old rescue pointer mix named Thurber. He is my hiking buddy, fellow birdwatcher, and all-around companion. Don’t know what I would do without him!
I’m a little disappointed to see only dogs portrayed in these photos – I love me some puppies, don’t get me wrong – but they aren’t the only kind of 4 legged friend us gals can have! My kitty is certainly my BFF (as is my bunny, though he doesn’t live with me anymore), and she even helps me do yoga – encouraging me to be a little more flexible with her crazy kitty stretches! She is there for me when I don’t feel good, is always ready for a good snuggle in the morning to start my day off right, and even greets me when I come home from work. She may not be a “loyal canine,” but she’s still a wonderful BFF!
These particular photos are from various photo shoots we’ve had for the catalog – and as someone who has three cats as well as two dogs, I can vouch that cats are less prone to do as requested when out on location! (My guinea pigs were also not quite as good at taking direction…) Check out our recent “Behind the Scenes” post; we had not only dog extras on set, but goats and chickens stealing the show as well. As an elementary school principal I hear and see a lot that cannot be shared. My little Gabbie Girl, an English Toy Spaniel, is a solid confidant. She patiently listens while on long walks at the state park near our home. She knows about the students I wish I could bring home and show a little love. She hears about it when one of them has made a really bad decision which requires me to hand out a consequence. She seems to understand as I grouse about all of the standardized testing. And best of all, she quietly waits in my office on the weekends as I finish the never ending stream of paperwork – ready to head to the park whenever it is completed.
I have a five year old Bernese Mountain Dog, Henri, that is the best winter hiking buddy anyone could ask for!! He’s completed two 5K dog jogs with me that support the Purdue University Veterinary Medicine outreach program. He is also an unofficial greeter at Tractor Supply. He has been a solid farm dog in keeping our equine and chickens safe.
He is truly my King Henri. 🙂
I don’t have a 4-legged pup, but I have 2 kitty cats that I adore. I work so much that it wouldn’t be fair to leave a dog locked up all day without companionship. So my 2 kitties take care of each other. Unfortunately, they despise water but are my buddies any other time. They love cuddles and snuggles. They are truly my babies and love every moment I spend with them.
