Working Out
I love to go for an early morning run on Thanksgiving. Then we have a big breakfast with chilaquiles (a Mexican tortilla and egg skillet dish) as the main attraction.
Although I am a runner, my 2 sons (age 10 and 15) are not. Every Thanksgiving though they get out there with me at our community’s Run for Food and support our local food kitchen and shelter. It is a great time for us together and I put aside my “race” and just run for fun with them.
I’m in the US military (Air Force) stationed overseas.
I currently Manage the largest Dining Facility on the base…this means FOOD & lots of it during the Holidays. Everyone (to include the Base Commander on down) comes out to either help Serve, Cook, Entertain or Clean Up.
The meals are enjoyed mostly by Singles Soldiers in the barracks & family members who’s spouse is deployed. We serve approx 1,000 people per meal. Can your dining room table handle that many guests?
My fellow squadron members who are deployed right now have the pleasure of doing the same at their Dining Facilities down range, to bring a “Taste of Home” to their fellow soldiers (Air Force, Army, Navy, Marines & countless brave Civilian employees) who are away from their familys & their own kitchens.
It’s a Proud & Honorable job, please pray for all Americas Soldiers no matter where they are stationed & Happy Thanksgiving!!!
For the last few years my sons (11 and 9), my mom and I have run the Turkey Trot in Davenport, Iowa. There is a 1 mile fun run and a 5 mile run. I will run the 1 mile as a warm up and then go out for the 5 mile run. Feels great to get going in the morning! The relaxing, visiting and eating with family all afternoon balances out the day.
I always make my “New Year’s Resolutions” on Thanksgiving and try them out for the rest of the year. That way I know what is and isn’t a realistic goal.
I just signed up to run my first 10K Turkey Trot. I’m new to running- just started this year and have run only 5Ks so far. The run is a benefit for The Refuge House, a shelter for victims of domestic and sexual violence including children. It’s certainly a good cause and I’ll feel less guilty about eating a big meal later.
I have 22 month old so I’m eager to start traditions that promote community and giving especially during the holidays when everything seems so retail oriented and excessive anymore. My sister, husband, son and I will be walking in the 3K Drumstick Dash on Thanksgiving morning to benefit our local food bank. I’m hoping this will be the beginning to a fun annual tradition.
I hit my running hard early in the day during which I swear off the typical overindulgence only to give in after all the festivities are over. Hopefully I will be more successful this year!
A town nearby has a Turkey Trot Fun Run every Thanksgiving morning. As many of the family that can go over and run or walk. Most of the time we do it as a family unit but sometimes one or two will take off on their own. It is a 5K around a lake. We have been doing it since my children were young and now the grandchildren are participating.
Ten years ago a group of five friends gathered the day after Thanksgiving at a country cabin in the mountains east of Pittsburgh. We all brought left-overs for a second feast! The next day we had a long wintery hike along the Laurel Highlands Trail.
One of the hikers and I became especially good friends. By the time Thanksgiving rolled around again, we were married. We now go hiking each year after Thanksgiving to commemorate that memorable first weekend together.
