Working Out
Every Thanksgiving, my YMCA puts on a Can-A-Thon(the cost of participation is a canned good to help the needy for their dinner) and we exercise from 8:30 a.m. to 10. It’s a mix of aerobics, kickboxing, and stretching. I’m a pilates instructor at this Y and many years I also end the marathon with 15 minutes of pilates. Different instructors take turns during the hour and a half. It’s a lot of fun and we burn the calories before we hit the mashed potatoes!
Funny you should call it a turkey trot. There is a local walk/fun run called the Turkey Trot. This is my Thanksgiving tradition. I usually do the 5k in the AM and then go back to the homestead for a wonderful breakfast prepared by my loving and supportive husband.
We travel from high altitude Denver to sunny Phoenix to visit my dad for Thanksgiving. My husband found a local Turkey Trot 5k that we have participated in for the past three years. We love coming to a flat, low altitude, short, fast-paced, family friendly race. Everyone can participate (kids under 17 are even free!) However, I have to say that our favorite part of the event is the prize! Age group and overall winners are awarded a pie for their efforts! Get in some exercise and then enjoy a Thanksgiving tradition: a pie! With many family members joining in on the fun, someone is destined to win a pie to share!
The only way to have a guilt free feed is to trot like a turkey early in the a.m. and then go home and help cook! I like the 5K race in midtown Galleria area of Houston to raise money for Elderly Services. The whole fam goes and we’re home by mid-parade. A perfect start to the day and the holiday season.
We wake at 5:30am, put on clown suits, drive to downtown Detroit, and take part in the Thanksgiving parade…handing out mardi-gras beads, and make lots of Detroiters happy. this year our kids will both join us, ages 18 and 20.
In the morning, at about 8 am, I join up with a BIG group of runners at Starbucks, about 50 people, and we run through town about 6 miles. Then we go back to Starbucks and I always have a pumpkin spice latte. I see folks I never see except for Thanksgiving morning. It is a lot of fun.
This all takes place in Ann Arbor, Michigan. It is usually cold and sometimes snows a little.
We have a long-standing Thanksgiving morning tradition—a group of us meet in Berkeley at 7 AM and run over the hills and through the trees to Orinda, about 10 miles away. We used to finish at the BART (rapid transit) station and take the train back to Berkeley, but as we are all getting older there are enough of us not running that we usually have enough cars at the finish to carry a potluck tailgate brunch and give everyone a ride home and get us there in time to start cooking. This year I will probably be the only woman of the group of four who will run the entire way.
Atlanta Marathon- Thanksgiving Day every year (including this one) since 2001
I run the 5K and the 10K at the Fort Worth Trot and totally rationalize all excess calories I put in my mouth for the remainder of the day! I drag the hubby and all 3 kids so we are together and we take a pic in front of the giant inflatable turkey. Forget the turkey- pass the stuffing, the rolls, and don’t forget the wine and cheese!!!!!
For the past 5 years, my husband and I have started our Thanksgiving morning by running the Turkey Trot in Portland, OR. The Oregon Road Runners Club puts on this event, and it occurs at the zoo. It’s a fantastic family event, and we feel like we have earned our right to indulge a little that afternoon!
