Working Out
Since I was a kid we always went on a Thanksgiving hike in the hills before the evening feast. My parents and us 4 sisters. No matter what we were all going through (and let me tell ya… 4 girls under one roof make for a lot of wacky harmones and drama) we’d grab those down vests and boots and get out and walk. Now that I have my own teenage daughter, my husband and I (and any family around) keep up the tradition. It cuts through all the holiday hype, clears out our brains and makes room for realizing all that we have to be thankful for.
My Sisters & I head for the Malls at 4:00 AM the day after Thanksgiving for some bargain hunting, donnning our best Title Nine comfort clothes and sport shoes, of course. We are usually done by Noon and than we head for the theatres to see the latest HOT movies. We will stay comfortable all day wearing all your great clothes & shoes & day packs. Thanks for everything!!!! Keep up the good work!!!

So excited to be sharing a new tradition with friends and family. Our city (Roseville, CA) is having it’s first Turkey Trot. Hats off to UltraRunner.net, who is sponsoring the run for the first time. We’ll all get a good a.m. run/walk (5 or 10K) then go enjoy turkey with the family. We’ve been asked to bring canned food for the hungry, so there’s a good cause, as well. My 69-year-old dad (from Montana) is joining in, and I know some 7 and 8-year-olds attempting the 5K distance. Go 2nd graders! Happy Turkey Day to all!
My daughter and I will do both the local Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving, (and get our free pie at the finish line 🙂 and the Noodleini 5K with the best post run snacks, on the following Sunday. This is about our 4th or 5th season of running these together…what a fun way to spend a holiday weekend with my just-turned-10 year old. (And yes, she is faster than mom…go, “Little Runner Girl” 🙂 !
We’re starting a new tradition this year: our local health club is closed, so we are planning to go for a 36 mile bike ride circling the few towns in our area. I live in New England, so we are planning to go in all kinds of weather (read, temperatures) except heavy rain or snow. I won’t feel so guilty indulging in an extra glass of wine or a piece of pie later in the day!! We will leave at sunrise and return in time for a late breakfast.
My tradition is to sneak out with my dogs while my family is still sleeping. We enjoy a long morning hike through the BLM trails here in Northern Nevada. There’s nothing like having your dogs with you in the wide open spaces with the blue sky above. Then we head home to cook up a great comfort meal to be enjoyed with family, eat till we bust and then of course we have to take the traditional after dinner waddle through then neighbor hood.

Thanksgiving is the time when all of my extended family is together at once. Our tradition is for the kids to watch the animated “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” while the adults play Pictionary.
Following these activities is a late night snack of Rolls and Cold Turkey.
We make the Turkey Trot a family event each year. We begin preparations the day before by creating something unusual to wear (this year we will be making turkey hats). We all run or walk the race (including me, my husband, our 3 kids, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins – whoever is at the get-together that year), then come home and start preparations for the feast to come later in the day. We live in south Florida, so the kids usually hit the pool after the run, and hang out until dinner time. And, when we travel for Thanksgiving, we always sign up for the Turkey Trot in our non-local city to maintain the tradition.
For as many years as I can remember, I’ve been running the Newport Fed Pie Run, a 5 mile road race in Middletown, RI on Thanksgiving morning. Usually I run alone, but occasionally a friend or two will join me, and this year for the first time my oldest son will join me! All runners donate a canned good and receive a pie, but there are usually many left over after the race, so I come home with several! It feels good to get a workout in before the big feast. And the coveted tech shirt comes in handy, but you have to register early to get one!
For years I have always thaw the turkey on my back porch in a brown paper bag, just like my mom did. My grown daughter called and asked how to thaw her turkey and I gave her the same instructions, but she had 2 cats and a dog…end of the brown paper bag and the frozen turkey!
