Your list leans heavily to the left. How about leaving your political opinions out of it, and adding some of my favorites: Sarah Palin, Ann Coulter and Christine O’Donnell?
My grandmother, Anne Thompson Whelan, who left her comfortable home in Maryland in the late 1800s for a 300 sq. ft. log cabin in the Wyoming wilderness where she bore and raised seven children.
Sarah Palin, definitely. She stubbornly stays the course in spite of “rough treatment” by the media and the powers that be. She is a dedicated wife, mother, and consumate outdoorsman, and isn’t afraid to stick to her beliefs and ideals in the face of ridicule. She seems to know who she is and likes it. Kudos.
I also agree with adding Margaret Thatcher (tough and gritty in the then, Mens World of Politics), Mother Theresa (firmly grounded, tough yet soft at the same time), and Mary the Mother of Jesus (wow).
I’d have to say that Sarah Palin has taken a quiet a bit of “heat to make her mark” than Xena. I really think you should edit this list and add her. I’m not a fan of her politics but she should definitely be included. Hillary Clinton is a good choice.
Yes – Sarah Palin would be a good pick. She maintains dignity when her detractors don’t. I’d add Qeen Elzabeth (The current one) for the same reason.
Also:
Doris Day — She was one heck of a funny girl ( Even when her own life and dog lover to boot. Her ranch is a haven for many dogs without homes. What a heart.
Margaret Thatcher – She is known as The Iron Lady. Enough said. Never went wobbly. Channeled Queen Elizabeth 1, Victoria?
Mary, the Mother of Jesus. – She never doubted…
Mother Teresa — She schooled Heads of State about priorities. That Nobel acceptance speech– whew!
Scarlett O’Hara — a character yes, but WHAT a character!
Joan of Arc — Visionary with grit.
Ayn Rand – from leaving behind Communist Russia as a kid and travelling alone to America where chance meeting with Cecil B DeMille in Hollywood led to her career as a writer to publishing books that spawned an economic/political/philosophical movement, she was never afraid to rock the boat — or just plain ROCK!
Condi Rice- Ran the State Dept. Seat at the Table with the boys- trusted by a President. Classical pianist, classic girl…..
Oops– on Doris Day comment- I meant to say she was a funny girl even when her own life was sad at times. She didn’t play that out in public… She did her thing, was tough, unbeaten and when she hadvenough of Hollywood she went to her ranch to pursue what she loves. I didn’t finish my thought on the original post… The Auburn-Clemson game got me all distracted! Pulling for the SEC especially after UGA lost today. Come ON boys!
Katherine Switzer….she is the perfect renegade. We all remember the picture of her being the first woman to run the Boston Marathon. She made a huge difference for woman’s running. She practically started the movement! Read Marathon Woman…it is a great book.
Margaret Sanger was a true renegade. As a nurse she recognized the effects of unplanned and unwanted pregnancies on a woman’s health. She dedicated her life to promoting birth control and in 1916 set up the first birth control clinic in the US. She took a great deal of “heat” to make her mark.
Regardless of one’s political beliefs, how can anyone argue that Sarah Palin has probably taken more heat to make her mark than any other woman in the recent past? I’m afraid that I would much rather my young daughters look to her as a roel model than Lady Gaga!
It’s an insult to the women on this list that a ficticious character was included. Xena?
Eugenie Scott – She is the Executive Director for National Center of Science in Berkeley, CA.
