Working Out
As a person fighting Young Onset Parkinson’s Disease for 12 years now, sometimes just getting out of bed in the morning can be a “schralp.” This is a neurogenic disease with no cure. I advocate for others with PD by raising awareness of, and obtaining continued monies for finding a cure at the state, local, and national level. We have solid data that vigorous exercise can help delay the progression of this horrid disease, so I do what I can to raise awareness and monies by riding in the STP (Seattle to Portland Bicycle Classic, 205 mile bike ride) for the past two years. Schralp on!!
I was climbing waterfalls in Pennsylvania several weeks ago. Amazing and awe-inspiring views, and certainly a very physical and technical challenge, even for this seasoned hiker. The ascent was successful, and so fulfilling! But on the descent, a sharp rock punctured my ankle, right down to the bone! I still had about a half-mile hike through (not along!) a creek to get to the car, but with my husband’s help and my own years of experience on foot through rough terrain, (and a lot of deep breathing and silly singing), we made it, and luckily made it to the clinic in time to get it stitched up. I got to rest up for a few days, then it was the start of the school year, and I had to prepare my classroom — and myself — for 100 seventh and eighth graders!
Last Saturday, I chip timed a 5k in morning, had our 3 girls family birthday party in the afternoon – and followed it up with a 18 mile run before church on Sunday morning! I’m thankful I don’t need to schralp that much every weekend. 😉
I recently planned and led a backpacking trip for 20 people on the Appalachian trail. Several mother-daughter groups went along, and ages ranged from 11 to 55. It couldn’t have gone better! The key? A lot of planning on the front end and a super-positive attitude plus an amazing co-facilitator.
This summer I traveled with 2 fellow teachers, our principal and the district assistant superintendent. We went to present at a conference in Minneapolis. I schralped when the group voted to go to Mall of America over kayaking. I did survive but only because we went on two rides.
I love that word. I’m going to use it at school where I teach kindergartners through 6th graders violin. We use a musical instrument to schralp all sorts of interesting terrain – cognitive, artistic, social, physical – and we come out stronger, smarter, more creative and, in general, more noble human beings.
By the way, schralp on, Kathleen – best wishes in your battle with the big C.
After a 7.5 hour surgery in June and a radiation treatment this past Friday, I am hoping to schralp thyroid cancer and get back to long trail runs and mountain bike rides in the mountains with my husband this fall. Sometimes we get wrapped up in the daily routine of “life” and we forget to LIVE life. Savor every moment!
I completed my 2013 triathlon season by schralping my first two Ironman’s in 8 weeks time! It feels amazing to accomplish my goals and become a stronger schralper! Check out my journey through my blog at http://thejoyoftriathlon.wordpress.com/ 🙂 Enjoy!!
I navigate tricky terrain everyday. I teach Art to kids pre-k thru 8th grade. If that isn’t Tricky I don’t know what is. Oh yes, I am also the mother of a great 12 year old.
Celebrated six month post-op total hip replacement at 58 years old with a six day bike tour of the San Juan Islands. Did nearly 100 miles with lots of elevation gain (who knew the islands were the tops of mountains)! Had a great time and looking for the next adventure.
