Working Out
My Rhodesian Ridgeback, Banzai and I put on our lights and head out for our run at 4:30am! Don’t question, just get out and do it. You will feel fabulous all day long! Happy miles!
Cross Country Skiing!!! Let it snow!!
I live in a more moderate climate in Austin, Texas so no snow to deal with. I do love to swim laps for exercise so I swim in heated pools or at my favorite one, an outdoor, spring-fed pool in a shorty wetsuit in the four or five coldest months. I also take Jazzercise, ride my bike, and occasionally run. I like to mix it up so I never get bored and plan which activity I’ll do based on weather but I always get out daily.
Just want to promote Yaktrax. These little helpers have kept me walking and running, either in Flagstaff, Az or Springfield, Mo. Snow and ice are no problem, slippage- wise, with Yaktrax. And of course, shoveling is another nice workout when snow is getting deep. Yaktrax help there ad well.
As well. Correction
I live in Baltimore but hail from Chicago originally. As it gets colder and darker, I put the lighted collars on the dogs, a head-light on myself and continue to hike before and after work across farmlands 7 days a week. I also bundle-up and ride the horse on the weekends. He doesn’t seem to care about the snow and cold so he’s always game.
I live in Chicago and wouldn’t want to try surviving the long winter months without playing Platform Tennis known as Paddle to all who play. It’s a fast growing sport played in the winter with a paddle, ball, and net, inside a raised open top cage. It’s similar to doubles tennis on a smaller scale. We need warm layers that can be removed as we warm up and go for the win. Title Nine has some of the best clothes for paddle players. Many of us cherish the cold killer pants but the light down vests, turtle necks, hooded sweaters and jackets designed for movement are all favorites. I don’t work for Title 9 even though it sounds like I just wrote an ad. Jocelyn
Nothing like a dog to get you off the couch and enjoying Winter, no matter the temperature. I have a Corgi, which makes it challenging when the snow gets deep, so we follow the local snowmobile trails and she just flies! And since she has to get out around the house she forces me to do lots of snowshoeing to make her trails in the yard at home.
I live in a suburb of Chicago…so we get full on winter for many months. Instead of cursing the cold and snow I have taken up cross country skiing. I LOVE to ski on the frozen lake near my house. When the sun comes out the snow sparkles and I feel like I am skiing on diamonds! Believe me, I am rarely cold during a good workout. I start off with lots of layers and often strip down to the base layer before I am through.
I do long-distance runs outdoors all winter long in northern Colorado. With the right clothes, the cold and dark don’t matter. My motivation…it’s easier to maintain my fitness level than to lose it and have to do all that hard work again. That thought gets me out the door.
So glad to see that others have the same niggling despair about the upcoming change of seasons!!! I live in the western mountains of Maine but am not a native. The cold and dark are looming ever so heavy over me as I get yet another year into my mid 60’s. I am very addicted to hiking, running, and walking but NOT in the cold and dark. I am trying to hold myself accountable for my health this winter. I tell myself I am the one in control here. I feel so healthy and happy at the moment because I had a full summer of outdoor activity. Today I say “Bring it on!” I hope tomorrow hears the same voice.
