Working Out
My boyfriend and I co-led a llama trip in the Escalante National Monument. The trip was amazing. We lucked out and had good weather all 6 days. We never got spit-upon by a llama. They were really quite adorable.
My last adventure was a trip to Costa Rica with my best friend growing up. We went waterfall repelling, white water rafting, zip-lining, horseback riding, swimming in a waterfall, hiked up a volcano, relaxed in hot springs, and I learned to surf while she graciously took pictures so I could prove that I could stand up on the surf board. I got home yesterday morning and am busy planning the next adventure (and I got the Rogue 5 inch shorts to go with me and they were great! I’m hoping for more colors)
Running through Golden Gate Park with girls from all over the Bay Area for their annual “Girls on the Run 5K”! There is nothing as inspiring as seeing the determination on these youngsters’ faces (and on the faces of their families, teachers and friends). We hope that crossing the finish line and receiving their medals is something that will keep these young women inspired and active for many years to come.
I ran the Paris Marathon for my 55th birthday and for my 30th wedding anniversary! It was a WOW!
My last adventure was at Everglades National Park, FL. We (hubby and 8 year old son) signed up for a canoe trip of the Ten Thousand Islands led by a park ranger. Excited and enthusiastic, we put out at the designated location, it was a little breezy, the wind was at about 4 knots. About 1.5 hours into the trip the winds had picked up to about 8 knots and the second party of 2 couldn’t make it and had to be rescued. We chuckled at their embarrassment of having to haul their canoe in the rescue boat and we paddled on… then about another 1.5 hours after that the winds had picked up to 18 knots and we were struggling… the metal canoe had a really sharp keel that was getting turned around and around and finally a huge gust just blew us into the tangled maze that are a mangrove hammock in the water… we were stuck!! And as my hubby and I tried to use our oars and push against the mangrove roots, our budding naturalist 8-year old was expressing very vocal concern about how we were “destroying the mangroves” and “going to hurt the giant saltwater tree-snails” on those mangrove roots!! One of those funny moments where we had to laugh… finally after about 45 mins of struggling, we gave up and called park rescue and had to be rescued!!! When we were safely on the shore, we found out that we missed the “all boat trips cancelled due to the wind” announcement by about 7 minutes… so we didn’t have to feel too embarrassed!! We might have not paddled the entire Ten Thousand Island canoe trail, but definitely have a great story to tell now!!
My last real adventure was last year’s spring break. I took my daughter, who had just turned 10 on a trip to the Grand Canyon -just the her and I. We flew into Phoenix, rented a car and drove up to the National Park for a day. Then we drove to an Indian Reservation for the Havasupai, (which is some 80 miles past the last gas station), parked our rental and back-packed down and into the canyon some 8.5 miles to the tiny, little known town of Supai. We spent 2 days there, exploring 3 of the Grand Canyons waterfalls. Mooney Falls was our favorite, but ridiculously-crazy to climb down to. It is as tall as Niagra. There are 2 tunnels to go thru before you have to descend a near vertical climb using these chains that are drilled into the cliff as places to hold on to while you try to find somewhere for your feet. “What was I thinking” was all I could hear myself thinking as I guided my daughter’s feet. The climb ends with 2 wooden ladders. I had seen pictures and read some descriptions, but until you do it, there is no way to really grasp the experience! I almost kissed the ground when my daughter was safely down. She jumped up, hugged and thanked me for the most fun she had ever had and begged me to let her climb it again! After swimming in the turquoise blue water of the falls for nearly the whole day, we climbed back up and hiked to 2 miles back to the lodge. The next day, we helicoptered out to our car and began the long drive to Phoenix, and our flight back to Detroit. Best adventure EVER, and I do hope someday I can do it again!
My latest adventure was a marathon swim event: Four lakes in four days and more than 40 miles of open water swimming in the desert canyons of the Lower Salt River. Hardest thing I have ever done. Over 25 hours of swimming. Most fun too. Amazing people, fabulous support, beautiful scenery. Great adventure!
Our latest adventure was taking my 4- and 7-year-old kids to Breckenridge. The first time I went was about 8 years ago, before kids, and the trip made such an impression on me I found myself aching to return every year; the time previous to this family trip was when my husband took me there for a solo trip to celebrate my birthday. We had so much fun, we decided to take the kids for a family trip. My daughter fared quite well on the slopes, unafraid to tackle the big mountains; my son, on the other hand, was cautious and quite disagreeable on trying anything but the green slopes. Showing the kids (and seeing them experience) an environment so drastically different from our east-coast urbanity, however, was the biggest adventure. The scale there took them out of their element, and it’s an experience I hope leaves an impression on them to realize that the world has boundaries beyond just what they see on a daily basis.
My greatest adventure, to date, will begin Friday. I will be running Thunder Rock 100 mile trail race. Gasp! This will push my body, mind and soul beyond imaginable limits. Who needs boundaries?
Our latest adventure was on Easter weekend. We decided on a last minute back country camping trip in the mountains of Golden , Colorado. My kids , who are 4 and 7, were down for the adventure but were concerned about one thing- the Easter bunny. We assured them that the big bunny would deliver and that he (she) did. We packed in all of our food, gear along with the Easter basket and the candy filled eggs for the Easter egg hunt .
Our kids and dogs were so excited, running around the campsite raising holy heck. Then the weather turned to storms and we ended up in the tent the rest of the afternoon. Thankfully I was on my A game while packing and packed Uno and a huge bag of chocolate covered goji berries ( no idea what a goji berry is but it rocks).
After the weather cleared we started a fire , cooked some hotdogs and roasted marshmallows. It was perfection:)
With full bellies we retired to bed in our cozy tent. 2 adults, 2 kids and 2 dogs makes for a very tight sleeping arrangement. But soon everyone was snoozing awaiting the bunny to make his(her) delivery.
My husband awoke before sunrise to put out the now frozen candy filled eggs. The kids were over the moon that the bunny made a stop at our backcountry site. The searched and found 15 eggs each and proceeded to eat all the candy before breakfast.
This was the best Easter so far I have ever experienced. We hope to make every year, no scratch that every DAY as special as this was:)
