Working Out
My latest adventure was completing my 4th annual trip to Isle Royale National Park with some of my high school students. It is amazing to watch as these young people experience this magnificent island and backpacking for 4 days. All of them are new to backpacking and living in the wilderness but every one of them does so well and learns so much about what they are able to do. It is also wonderful to watch them learn to live by ‘island time’ – needs are met as they arise not because the clock is in charge. I can’t help but smile when I hear them share all of their discoveries – large and small – and be so excited about them. I feel so fortunate that I have students who are willing to take on this adventure and try something new. I also feel very fortunate that at age 50+ I keep up with them without any issues and feel so energized by our time there. I love going backpacking on my own but there is something special about seeing it through the eyes of these young people.
My husband, Jim, and I began a ritual in the winter of walking around the block (about a mile) in the dark here in the Texas Hill Country. We always offer to include our 18 year old and when she is home, our 23 year old, but they have always heartily turned us down. What they are missing!
We have created a new relationship with the sky, constellations, shooting stars, bats, neighborhood dogs, and how blessed we have been by cooler night time temperatures. We may only make it 5 nights a week, but it is peaceful and connecting way to end the day. Sometimes we need to hash something out, and that works too. What would we do without Mother Nature to hold us through it all?
I was not an athlete growing up in the stodgy 1950’s – but last September, at age 74, I hiked 260 miles of the Camino de Compostela de Santiago in northern Spain. It was thrilling just being present to each moment (I had to watch every step climbing and descending the Pyrenees) and I felt so joyful being in the midst of nature, surrounded by such beauty, and with no agenda other than simply being.
When I look at the beautifully athletic women in your catalog, I wonder what it might have been like to have had that experience in my youth and childhood.
I am a working mom of 12yo and 10yo and we finally had a beautiful sunny day in Seattle. My last meeting ended at 2pm, I had 2 hours before I needed to pick up my son from school. I just got a new SUP board for Mother’s day and dying to take it out. Quickly, I loaded it on top of my car, drove down to Lake Sammamish and off I went to paddle. I saw two bald eagles and had some peaceful and quiet moments. 30 minutes later, I hopped in the car and off to school to pick up my son. It was quick but totally worth it.
Just spent the last 9 months as a worship leader at a church in the Gold Coast of Australia! I was able to go on many small excursions including hiking 12 kilometers with phenomenal views of waterfalls, staying on the worlds largest sand island full of wild dingoes, surfing lessons, sea kayaking, snorkeling, exploring rock pools, selfies with kangaroos, working many random temp jobs to make ends meet, playing my guitar, and just taking in the culture around me. Honestly most of it wasn’t a physical challenge or obstacle but the emotional and spiritual side was just as much a part of the adventure!! I had a lot of “unknowns” heading into it but this quote stuck with me that one of my pastors said ” don’t let the fear of the unknown determine the adventure” solid words to remember when life’s opportunities present themselves! Go seek and Love!
I’m an east coast girl but found myself at 52 years old in Creede, Colorado for the winter (another story). After getting settled I was ready to roll and headed to Wolf Creek Ski Area to ski powder and steeps. I ended up teaching skiing for spring break for over a month. I hiked up to Alberta Peak 11,900 feet and skied down some of the steepest terrain I’ve ever tried. Beautiful. Perfect. Linked Turns. Big Smiles.
and weekend 2
Two crazy adventures in two weeks. Zion’s Relay Ragnar in pouring rain and snow and the very next weekend Ironman 70.3 in St. George, Utah in 97 degree weather!
What fun adventures! I love my adventures…..
An extreme off-road duathlon complete with mud, streams of snow run off, rocks, sticks and loose leaf ground cover, a “hill” everyone had to walk their bikes up (twice!), a major bloody shin, and first in my age division (approaching 50!!). Great adventure!
This April a team of 9 runners ran 200 miles from Gettysburg, PA all the way to Washington, DC = American Odyssey Relay!!! One of the greatest experiences and this was my 2nd year to participate. 4 legs each over a period of 32+ hours. Such an awesome team and an awesome event. It was a festival of SWB’s and we rock it!!! Can’t wait till next year.
