It’s that special day which comes only once a year. How are you celebrating your momma? Now we don’t wanna hear about any brunch – so you got any new traditions? A few years ago we started one ourselves with our Annual Mother’s Day Title Nine 9k in Boulder, Co. We realize not everyone can make it (and we’ll miss you). But you can still share the way you t9-ify Mother’s Day below. Make sure to check out a few pics of us with our Momma’s. Aaahhhhh, Memories!
We spent the day hiking the Bear Trap Canyon along the Madison River. It was nice and sunny. So much fun to get out and enjoy the outdoors with my family.
Every year on Mother’s Day my husband and son take me to my favorite local garden center, Farmer’s Daughter (women owned and run!) for some new plants. I get to choose my favorites and then we spend the day gardening. I LOVE it. It is a wonderful tradition and I end the day knowing we’ll reap the rewards of our efforts all summer long and that I’ve gotten in some good exercise!
Every year, my five children and I, ages 10-20, get up, eat a leisurely breakfast and then head to the Cape May County Zoo, which is about 10 miles from my house. I visit the zoo occasionally during the year, but usually the only time all five of my children are with me is on Mother’s Day. This Mother’s Day happens to be an absolutely beautiful day…blue skies, a slight wind, partly sunny. We’ve had so much rain lately, this is an awesome surprise. I will end out my day today studying for an Anatomy & Physiology final that I have tomorrow morning at 10am…all in all….a perfect Mother’s Day 2009….no complaints at all.
The day begins with breakfast in bed, served by my 3 girls, always with a small vase holding a fresh flower from the garden. I open presents, some bought, some made, and then we are off for a day at the beach with the family and our 2 dogs. We look for sea glass, lie on the sand, throw the frisbee, and listen to the surf. Then we head to a coast side restaurant to have a lovely meal with a glass of tasty wine. Life in California is good.
As ‘Mom’ to my two labradors, the perfect Mother’s Day begins with puppy kisses and includes a hike among the trees, whereby an out-of-state call to my Mother is made, with a view of Pike’s Peak in the distance. Then my hands get dirty with ‘Mother Earth’ – planting colorful flowers and the odd tree. The day wraps with a quiet dinner with my ‘girls’ and hubby, celebrating everything I’m so thankful for.
My best Mother’s Day was when we were able to open the pool. (We live in MN, and it is rare to have the pool open that early.) I floated on my new (gift) floaty all day, and the kids did all of my little interupting errands all day! It was so relaxing.
With my daughter – she lives in NYC, I’m in FL, and we SKYPE and chat lots, but it is special on Mother’s Day because gets up by 9:30 am to do this (she is one of those sleep-til-noon college student types)! She sent my favorite cookies – Vegan Oatmeal Raisin from Whole Foods – even if you think you couldn’t enjoy a cookie without chocolate (as I was convinced), this cookie is amazing and actually pretty darn guilt free without tasting like it…but even if it isn’t THIS cookie, go be decadent today, all you moms out there!
Every Mother’s Day for 6 years while we lived in Livingston, MT, we would get up early in the morning and drive down to Yellowstone Park to spend the day looking for grizzly bears, brown & black bears, moose, otters, wolves and other animals. One year, we saw 13 grizzly bears that day — 6 moms and 7 cubs!
For the last 10 yrs. I have always requested that my family (myself, my husband, three sons and a daughter) go on a hike. My favorite was a 10 mile hike through the Guana Preserve, which is north of St. Augustine, FL. When we were finished with our hikes, we always sat down together for burgers and cokes and recovered from our exercise. Two of my sons are now off on their own (college students) and they are hiking today in Yellowstone National Park. I guess they liked the tradition.
My new mother’s day tradition is to take a yoga class in the famous Colony Hotel in Delray Beach Florida. It’s a historic hotel in a large room that opens it’s doors to the ocean and the class is taught to live music. The whole family can attend. What better way to spend the day?
