Working Out
How about Race for the Cause? It’s not just about curing – though that is important. It’s also about understanding why we are getting breast cancer in the first place… and demanding action. Industry is happy to wrap itself in pink to help raise awareness or support treatment. Let’s see them get behind reformulating products to pull toxins out of our air, water, and bodies. Let’s see companies confirm their supply chain to ensure it is clear of products known or likely to contribute to breast cancer (and other dreaded diseases).
God bless you Tami and your strength!! And thank you! Mammograms may not be 100 percent but nothing is!!!
I’m sure the message was not intended to deter mammograms, although that is how it sounds!
I think you missed the mark. I was with you until the conclusion and now I have no idea how to address it. I am actually dumbfounded.
Like Tami, I too am a survivor and deal with the fear every 6 months when I see the oncologist.
I work out every day, I hug my family and my pug Izzy and I value my life. It takes more than that for breast health in women that have history with this disease.
I’m sorry to say I the future, I need to rethink my choice when purchasing products offered by your company.
Missy, your sentiments are a breath of fresh air and long overdue! You are correct in stating that the death rate has not budged in the last 10 years. Corporations need to stop parading themselves in Pink and deceiving their customers in order to increase their own revenue. The public has been led down a path to a ‘cure’ when really it has only been about treatment…underwritten by the big drug companies who really have little interest in a cure because it will hurt their bottom line. Kudos to leading your company down the RIGHT path. I applaud you and what your company stands for which is raising awareness about the LACK of a cure and waking us all up to demand something better.
As a 4 year survivor of stage 3 cancer, I find October an incredibly hard month to live through with the constant PINK in your face. However, there are still women that I talk to who don’t have a mammogram. Yes – its true we don’t have a cure, but you can be a survivor of breast cancer. We don’t have cures for many illnesses or diseases, but at least we have treatments that can raise the survivor rate!!! I’m here to see both my daughter and son graduate from high school.
You’ve missed the point that awareness donations during this month are also funding RESEARCH FOR THE CURE………….You’re lucky that you haven’t walked in my shoes as a survivor – – – go get your mammogram, and wear pink proudly to seek a cure !!!
Bravo! Thank you for speaking up. I love your company even more.
I couldn’t have said it better myself. What an AWESOME op-ed email. I don’t know what made me pause and read the whole thing, but I’m glad I did. Phenomenal viewpoint and I think I’ll carry on the same sentiment. Bravo!!!
Very brave of you, and I completely agree. It’s just rare to find this point of view, and even rarer to find people willing to express it. Thank you.
Missy,
better outcomes stem from early detection. Early detection goes hand in hand with screening, Don’t be bitter about all the pink in October, if it prompts just one woman to go get a mammogram, well then it’s worth it. As a surgical oncology nurse I see the best and the worst outcomes, if a pink pen or a pink ribbon or a pink coffee cup can prompt someone to get a long overdue mammogram, I’ll take it any way I can get it, I fight for cancer patients 12 months out of the year, I’m happy to have one month when people are talking about it, and spreading the word.
